Greetings from the President

Ohara Hirotaka, MD, Ph.D.
President

In 2014, NCU established the Charter of Nagoya City University, which sets out its fundamental philosophy and guiding principles. Under the “Future Plan of Nagoya City University,” NCU set forth four visions, and began advancing reforms in alignment with its medium-term objectives as a corporate entity. In 2021, NCU formulated the “Future Plan of Nagoya City University 2021,” and in February 2026, looking ahead to 2050, the year of its 100th anniversary, NCU defined its desired future vision as NCU ? Always the Best and compiled five specific phrases under the title “Our Future 2050.” NCU will continue to evolve steadily, while maintaining a long-term and strategic outlook.

NCU’s core mission lies in intellectual creation. To ensure that NCU continues to serve as a center for the creation of knowledge, we will promote innovative interdisciplinary research and work to realize innovation based on social issues and needs. Furthermore, we will actively recruit young researchers who will lead the next generation, develop a comfortable working environment, and enhance support for cultivating outstanding researchers, thereby ensuring excellent research outcomes.

In terms of education, one of NCU’s key missions in today’s rapidly changing world is to cultivate “autonomous learners” who have the ability to solve problems independently. In particular, in addition to enabling students to acquire specialized knowledge in their respective fields, we are developing an environment in which they can acquire the skills and mindsets required in a society where AI technologies are making rapid advancements.

In April 2025, we established the Medical Department of Health Sciences and launched a Major in Rehabilitation Science to train physical therapists and occupational therapists. At the graduate level, we established a new Graduate School of Data Science to cultivate highly specialized professionals with practical data utilization skills applicable across a wide range of fields.

In the medical field, we will leverage the 2,223 beds in our six affiliated hospitals to provide high-quality, advanced medical care that accurately responds to regional healthcare needs. Furthermore, we will share and apply our research outcomes, such as more effective treatment methods that contribute to healthy longevity, while also striving to cultivate outstanding healthcare professionals.

All faculty and staff across our seven faculties and eight graduate schools will continue to work diligently to ensure that NCU continues to develop as an institution that consistently contributes to society and the local community. We sincerely ask for your continued support.
