Greetings from the Chairperson

Kenjiro Kohri, MD, Ph.D.
Chairperson

Nagoya City University (NCU) traces its lineage back to the Nagoya School of Pharmacy, established in 1884, and the Nagoya Municipal Women’s Medical College, established in 1943, and was founded in 1950 with its Medical School and Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences as its core foundation. Today, NCU carries out education and research across eight fields: Medicine, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences, Design and Architecture, Nursing, Biology and Integrated Sciences, and Data Science.

Under its 4th Medium-Term Plan beginning in the 2024 academic year, NCU designated research, facilities development, internationalization, and digital transformation as priority areas in line with its three missions as a university: to cultivate outstanding talent, share cutting-edge research with the world, and enhance the health and well-being of citizens. Looking ahead to NCU’s 100th anniversary in 24 years, a broad group of faculty and staff
have formulated a future vision titled “Our Future 2050,” and under the key phrase NCU ? Always the Best and guided by the principles of “Being the Best” and “Students and Patients First,” we are undertaking the following initiatives.

[Education and Research]
We are currently constructing new education and research facilities at our Takiko and Tanabe-dori campuses. We also plan to open an affiliated integrated junior and senior high school in April 2029, becoming the first public university in Japan to do so.

[Healthcare]
With the addition of a rehabilitation hospital in the 2025 academic year, NCU’s network now includes six affiliated hospitals. As one of the largest hospital groups among the national and public universities in Japan, with a total of 2,223 beds, we play a central role in regional healthcare. In June 2026, Nagoya City University will open the nation’s largest emergency and disaster medical center, further supporting the health, safety, and security of citizens.

Through these initiatives, NCU has received the generous distinction of being ranked No. 1 nationwide for three consecutive years (six years in total) in the National Survey on Regional Contribution Activities of Universities conducted by Nikkei Inc. In the 2025 academic year, the number of mentions by media outlets also reached a record high of over 8,000. These achievements are
solely the result of the efforts of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni??and building on this momentum, we will continue striving to become a world-leading university.

NCU has grown and developed thanks to the generous understanding and support of the City of Nagoya and its citizens. Looking ahead, we will continue to pursue challenges and reforms through accurate assessments of the rapid changes occurring in society, as we advance toward making NCU ? Always the Best. We humbly ask for your continued guidance and support.
